YouTube Thumbnail Image Size Video - The Premise
We observed that some places in YouTube showed a cropped version of our video thumbnail image.
So we set out to explore where this cropped version of our very important thumbnail image occurs inside YouTube and even outside YouTube like in Google's Search Results Pages when we were fortunate enough to get awarded a thumbnail in that most hallowed of online locations.

How much of the image is cropped away when YouTube decides to crop was a major area of focus for our research project. This reserach project used a video that was created with a "standard" 4:3 ratio. We may work on another fact-finding effort for the 16:9 "wide" ratio, but this effort will focus on the 4:3 "Standard" size.
We'll give you a hint right now, the cropping seems to mainly effect the top and bottom and not the sides of the thumbnail image.

We were surprised to learn that not all locations of thumbnail usage in YouTube were treated the same. Some places where the thumbnail was displayed it was cropped while other places the thumbnail image was shown in all of its splendor– full image, no cropping.
