Video Thumbnail Trick works every time
The method of inserting a quickly displayed still shot works every time IF you know the proper positions for the still image to be inserted. Most video editing software will let you insert a still image into the middle of a movie... so all you need to know is the proper location for the image.
We usually insert multiple still shots into one movie then upload the same movie to the proper sites that will then create the thumbnails from expected spot. One site might take the thumbnail shot from the beginning, another might take it from another location from within the clip, yet another grabs it from near the end.
We insert the still image so it straddles the exact number we calculate (these numbers are shared with you for free for the specific length of 1:30.00) for a couple of frames before and after – for a total of 5 frames long. You can do just one frame if your software lets you but we prefer to let it show a bit longer to make sure it works every time!
Video Thumbnail Trick Calculations
We have spent weeks gathering data to create the formulas we use for many different video websites. In this document, we share with you the exact positions for inserting your still shots for a video that is exactly 1 minute and 30 seconds long (1:30:00). It should be made at 30 Frames Per Second (FPS). The format (i.e. MP4, AVI, WMV, M4V etc.) of the video should not matter as long as the site you will upload to can accept it.
Video Thumbnail Trick Warning!
When you add your still shot into your video, be sure that the overall length of the video does NOT change! The calculations given here are for the EXACT LENGTH. If you change the length of the video, even by just one frame, the trick may not work in some places and it is guaranteed to fail in others!
Depending on what program you are using to insert your still shots, the name of the needed editing feature will vary. It may be called "Cutaway", "Insert ...", "Picture in Picture", etc. Or you may need to Insert the still images, then trim off some of the end of the movie to return the overall length to the original length (in this case 1 minute, 30 seconds, 0 frames).
