How YouTube and Google Plus Connect
Both YouTube and Google Plus are owned by Google. So they connect with each other in many ways. This post is about what you can do to help Google (and the world) know that your YouTube Channel and your Google+ accounts are connected.
The Different Ways YouTube and Google Plus Connect
The parts you have control over are done on your YouTube Channel & inside your Google Plus profile (and/or page). You can connect them together by adding certain codes to each location. You add the Google+ ID (explained later) to your YouTube Featured Tab on your Channel, and you add the URL of your YouTube Channel to your Google+ profile & page.
How YouTube and Google Plus Connect – The Google Plus Part
Go to your YouTube Channel and copy the URL for your channel. Mine is: http://www.youtube.com/user/videoleadsonline. Take your channel’s URL and paste it onto the ‘About’ area of your Google+ account. It can be your Personal Profile ‘About’ page or your Business Page’s ‘About’ page.
For simplicity we will deal with a Google Plus Personal Profile as our example since all users of Google+ have one. You get to your Google Plus profile page by clicking on the Round circle icon with the ‘person’ inside the circle as shown here.
Once on the profile page, then you can click on the blue ‘Edit Profile’ button shown in the upper right of the page. If you don’t see that button it is likely you are not signed into your account (kind of hard to do, but possible).
Once you click the Edit Profile button you are prompted to click on the area you want to edit.
When you finish editing this page you click on the same area up top that was encouraging you to click on the area you wanted to edit.
Click on the area on the right side that says “Other Profiles” [note: You may want to do this same connection in your 'Contributor to' area as well - we first connected ours in the 'other profiles' area]. Type in a Title for your YouTube Channel, and paste in the URL for the Channel into the “Valid URL” area.
You will want to also put in other profile information like your Facebook profile, etc. You can do this via the ‘Manage connected accounts’ option just below the ‘Add custom link’ choice that you just used for connecting with YouTube.
Click ‘Done editing’ in the top red bar area, and you’ve done the part you needed to inside GooglePlus, now let’s go on to do the connection work inside the YouTube Channel.
How YouTube and Google Plus Connect – The YouTube Part
Before you leave Google Plus, look at the URL when you are on the Profile page. You will see a long list of numbers surrounded by other stuff. You want to copy the numbers from the URL. This is known as your Google Plus ID number. As an example, my ID number is: 108210288375340023376 which comes from the full Google Plus URL of: https://plus.google.com/108210288375340023376/about. You will need this Google Plus ID number when we go to connect from the YouTube side of things.
Make sure you are signed into your YouTube account and go to your YouTube Channel. Move to the Featured Tab if you are not already there. Then, in the upper right you should see an ‘Edit’ button. Click it and you’ll have the ability to add links to Google+ and other places. The Red arrow in the screen shot here shows the Big G+ logo you get when you connect YouTube and Google Plus together.
The orange arrows show how I also added in custom links to my Google Plus profiles. One is for my ‘personal profile’ and one is for my ‘business page’ – both on Google Plus. You may want to do the same thing as the ‘BIG’ Google Plus button will only let you link to one of your profiles, either the ‘personal’ one or one of the ‘pages’ you manage.
When you are inside the edit window here, you will have a choice to show the Google+ Logo (do it, that is why you are reading this!) as well as Twitter & Facebook. All 3 of these social media sites can have Big Graphic Icons.
When you choose to add the Google Plus logo you should see the option to ‘connect accounts’ as long as you are using the same Google account (likely your email address) for both Google+ and YouTube accounts. Click to connect the account and paste in your Google ID (mentioned above). You may be given the choice of which ‘profile’ you want to connect to (your personal one or your business pages you manage) choose it now – we suggest the Personal Profile choice – or press Apply up top and return to edit to make the choice if one is given. Press Apply again, and you have made the connection.
The screen shot shown here shows that I can choose from multiple Google Plus profiles, as I manage multiple accounts. My take on it for now is that I’ll get the most Google Juice out of my connections if the choice I make is to select my Personal Profile. That may change once Google+ decides to elevate the status of G+ Pages above their ‘second-class citizen’ status they currently hold (another post, for another time!).
You did it! Now you know How YouTube and Google Plus connect, so go for it. It really doesn’t matter which you do first, but you should try to connect both Google+ to YouTube and YouTube to Google Plus to get the best possible connection for you and your Video SEO work.
Having Issues Connecting your YouTube & Google Plus accounts?
You may run into issues trying to connect these two properties. Those isssues go beyond what we can discuss here, so I’d like to point you to the YouTube Help Docs that try to address most of those issues. We may do another post specifically about the challenges people are having when their Google Plus account uses a different ‘Google Account’ than their YouTube account does… but for now I leave it to the following help doc to try to help you out: http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/static.py?hl=en&topic=2476127&guide=2476124&page=guide.cs.
You can always try to contact me on Google+ to ask specific questions, I’ll see what I can do to help.
How YouTube and Google Plus Connect via Your Activity
You also connect YouTube and Google Plus via your activity. This means when you do certain things, like add a YouTube video to a post you write in Google Plus, you are continuing or confirming the connection in Google’s eyes. Because we focus on Video SEO here, we care about all the possible signals you may be sending Google’s way. Using your YouTube videos inside Google+ is a way to confirm to Google, that the two accounts are really working together.
You can paste in a YouTube Video URL right into a post you are writing, choose the ‘Add Video’ icon in Google+ and choose from the various options presented like grabbing a video from your own YouTube Channel (confirming the connection). You can also utilize the ‘Add Link’ icon in Google Plus and paste in the YouTube URL there. You can even paste a YouTube Video URL right into a comment you are writing inside Google+ and it turns that into a pretty Blue link named the ‘Title’ of the YouTube video once you publish the comment.
You can still post other people’s videos (YouTube or otherwise) inside Google+ without any problems, but that does not do anything towards establishing the connection between your account. Posting your own videos does.
